Many teens, both male and female, can struggle with how they view their body. Peers, media, social media, and even extracurricular activities can contribute to these struggles and distortions. Many teens have a negative or distorted view of their body. This could include feeling overweight or underweight, feeling unattractive, not having the “right or fashionable” body type or facial features, or feeling like they don’t fit in.  Teen development and responses to stress are unique.  At Journeys, we recognize this difference and work with our teen clients to first create safety, establish trust, and foster a connection, so their healing journey can begin.

Today’s teens are faced with a variety of challenges and issues that may contribute or co-occur with body image issues.

Individuals may choose to seek therapy for help with:

  • Eating disorders  (anorexia/bulimia/overeating)

  • Over-exercising or over-training for a sport/activity

  • Feelings of anxiety or depression

  • Being bullied or targeted by peers

  • Social media bullying or pressure

  • Thoughts of suicide or self-injury (cutting/burning)

  • Early signs of addiction (alcohol, drugs, eating disorders)

  • Disclosures of trauma and abuse

  • Significant stress or change in home environment

  • Inappropriate sexual behavior

  • Isolation

  • Anger outbursts

Teen Therapy Can Help:

The development and function of the adolescent brain is no doubt, very different than that of an adult.  We use a variety of ways to connect with teens through music, art, talking, journaling, and other forms of healthy self-expression.  Our therapists work to partner with each client to collaboratively craft a plan to identify the issues, learn to express feelings in healthy ways, establish coping skills, and develop a healthy body image and view of self. This process is unique to each individual client, but often will involve the parent or caregiver during the early assessment period.  When appropriate, Journeys therapists may work with other members of the family system in conjunction with the teen’s treatment.
